Updated May 19 2026. The best free credit card in Austria is the **free.at Mastercard Gold** (**EUR 0 annual fee**, no foreign-tx fee, travel insurance, no Austrian IBAN required). For frequent travellers, **N26 Metal** (EUR 16.90/month) and **American Express Platinum** (EUR 660/year, lounge access) are the strongest premium picks. Domestic options like **Erste Visa Gold (EUR 78/year)** and **Bank Austria Mastercard (EUR 30/year)** require an Austrian IBAN and a clean **KSV1870 credit record**. Move the sliders below to see your match.

## Where every card lands on cost vs. benefits

Plotting all 13 catalogued Austrian credit cards on two axes: annual cost (X) against benefits depth (Y). The top-left quadrant is the value sweet spot, the top-right is where premium players cluster.

The further up, the more benefits it bundles (travel insurance, lounge access, cashback, no-FX, English support). Top-left is the value sweet spot. Top-right is the premium tier where you pay for the bundle. Bottom-left is functional but bare. Annual cost above EUR 200 is shown on a compressed scale to keep the rest of the field legible.

## How does the score work?

Each card receives sub-scores on five axes, then a weighted average produces the headline match number out of 100. The weighting matches what readers consistently rank most decision-relevant in our credit-card user research:

- **Cost (35%)**: annual fee versus your stated cap. Cards over the cap drop sharply.
- **Benefits (25%)**: how many of your top-three benefits the card actually offers, weighted by your priority order.
- **Foreign-currency (15%)**: the card's FX fee blended with your foreign-spend share. Zero foreign spend means this axis cannot drag a card down.
- **Profile fit (15%)**: does the issuer accept newcomers / students / premium users in your bucket?
- **Approval ease (10%)**: Austrian IBAN and KSV1870 friction. Cards that hard-fail your situation (e.g. require an Austrian IBAN you don't plan to open) are dropped from the ranking entirely.
