## What Types of Cat Insurance Are Sold in Austria?

### Surgery-only (OP-Schutz)

Covers operations, the anaesthetic, and the aftercare tied to that operation. Nothing else. Costs **EUR 6.97 to EUR 13.80/month**. This is the tier to buy if your worry is the **EUR 2,000-5,000** emergency, not the EUR 60 consultation.

### Full health (Krankenversicherung)

Covers consultations, diagnostics, medication, and hospitalisation as well as surgery. Costs **EUR 12 to EUR 35/month**. Worth it for indoor cats too, because dental disease and kidney problems are treatment costs, not surgery costs.

Austrian cat owners have no third product to buy. Unlike dogs, cats need **no liability insurance**: Austrian civil law makes you liable for damage your animal causes, but a cat rarely causes the kind of injury that produces a claim, and no province requires cover. Your existing [household insurance](/insurance/household-insurance) (Haushaltsversicherung) usually includes personal liability that would respond anyway.

The practical decision is therefore between surgery-only and full health, and it turns on one number: what you could absorb yourself. A cat that swallows a hair tie needs an emergency laparotomy costing **EUR 1,500-3,000**. A cat with chronic kidney disease needs bloodwork, fluids, and a prescription diet indefinitely, and none of that is surgery. Surgery-only cover answers the first case and does nothing for the second.

## What Does Cat Insurance Cover?

### Usually covered

- ✓ Surgery, anaesthetic, and aftercare
- ✓ Vet consultations and examinations
- ✓ Diagnostics (X-ray, ultrasound, bloodwork)
- ✓ Prescription medication
- ✓ Hospitalisation and emergency care
- ✓ Dental treatment after injury or disease

### Usually NOT covered

- • Pre-existing conditions, permanently
- • Vaccination and deworming on basic tiers
- • Neutering, except on Helvetia Komfort
- • Breeding and pregnancy costs
- • Routine dental scaling on basic tiers
- • Behavioural training

The exclusion that costs owners the most money is **pre-existing conditions**, and Austrian insurers read it strictly. A condition counts as pre-existing if it existed or showed symptoms before the policy started, whether or not it was diagnosed. A vet note reading "slightly stiff hind leg" from before you signed is enough to exclude the arthritis treatment three years later. This is why the single highest-value action is to insure a kitten from **8 weeks old**, before there is any history to exclude.

Read the reimbursement rate alongside the deductible, because they compound. **Helvetia** reimburses **80%** and applies a deductible of **20% of the claim, minimum EUR 150**. On a EUR 400 bill that means you pay the EUR 150 minimum and Helvetia pays EUR 250, an effective reimbursement of 62.5%, not 80%. **Petcover** Superior tiers pay **100%** above a flat **EUR 90** deductible, which on the same EUR 400 bill returns EUR 310. Always run your own likely claim size through both formulas before comparing headline percentages.

## What Are the Waiting Periods and Age Limits?

Waiting periods and maximum entry age for Austrian cat insurance providers Petcover, DFV, Helvetia PetCare, AGILA, and HanseMerkur, as of August 2026
| Provider | Waiting period (illness) | Max entry age |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Petcover | 14-28 days, none for injuries | 8-10 yrs, none on Safety Net |
| DFV | None | 9 years |
| Helvetia PetCare | 3 months, accidents immediate | 5 years, 364 days |
| AGILA | 1 month | 9 years |
| HanseMerkur | 1 month, accidents included | 5 years |
Two clocks run against you. The **waiting period** is short and one-off: anything from **none** at DFV to **3 months** at Helvetia before illness cover starts. The **entry-age limit** is permanent: once your cat passes **5 years**, Helvetia and HanseMerkur will not write a new policy at any price, and by **9 years** only Petcover's Safety Net tiers remain open. Cats routinely live to **15 or 18**, and the expensive years are the last five, which is exactly when almost nobody will insure them for the first time.

### The age trap

If you are weighing cat insurance and your cat is approaching 5, this is the decision point, not a decision you can revisit later. Cover bought at age 4 continues for life. Cover you go looking for at age 7 is available from two providers, and at age 10 from one.

## How Much Does Cat Insurance Cost in Austria?

Monthly cat insurance premiums in Austria for 2026 by provider and cover type, from EUR 6.97 for surgery-only HanseMerkur cover to EUR 32.40 for Helvetia PetCare Komfort
| Cover type | Monthly cost | Cheapest provider |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Surgery only | EUR 7-14 | HanseMerkur, EUR 6.97 |
| Full health (entry) | EUR 12-22 | Petcover, EUR 12 |
| Full health (top tier) | EUR 32-35 | Helvetia Komfort, EUR 32.40 |
Premiums scale with **age and breed**, not with where you live. A domestic shorthair costs from **EUR 12.54/month** at AGILA against **EUR 16/month** for a pedigree, and every provider re-rates upward as the cat ages. **Petcover** is explicit about it: the deductible rises **20% at age 8** and **35% at age 10**, so the premium is not the only number that moves.

Set that against what Austrian vets charge. A consultation runs **EUR 40-70**, bloodwork **EUR 80-150**, dental treatment under anaesthetic **EUR 300-600**, and emergency abdominal surgery **EUR 1,500-3,000**. Full health cover at **EUR 12/month** costs **EUR 144/year**, so a single dental procedure roughly pays back three years of premiums. That maths is why full cover generally beats surgery-only for a young cat, and why surgery-only still makes sense on a tight budget.

### Insure the kitten, not the cat

Premiums are lowest and exclusions are fewest at 8 weeks old. Every month you wait adds both price and the risk that a vet note creates a permanent exclusion. Enrolling a kitten rather than a 5-year-old is the single largest saving available on this page.
