Updated August 2026. Household insurance (Haushaltsversicherung) covers your **contents** against fire, water, theft, and storm, and it bundles **personal liability** for damage you cause to others. It is **not legally mandatory**, but landlords often require it in the lease. In the **AK Oberoesterreich** November 2025 test on a 90 square metre flat, premiums ran from **EUR 122.07 per year** (HDI, about EUR 10.20 per month) to **EUR 236.32 per year** (Wiener Staedtische). A smaller flat costs less, from **around EUR 6 per month**.

## Is Household Insurance Mandatory in Austria?

No. Haushaltsversicherung is **not required by law** in Austria. There is no statute that forces a tenant or owner to hold one. But **landlords frequently require it** in the lease, and it is **strongly recommended** for renters because it bundles the personal liability you would otherwise buy separately.

The reason it matters is the **bundled liability**. Under Austrian civil law you are **personally liable** for damage you cause to others, and a burst pipe that floods the flat below can run into tens of thousands of euros. For standalone personal cover without contents, see our [liability insurance guide](/insurance/liability-insurance). When you first set up a flat, the household policy is usually the first insurance to arrange, as our [setting up home guide](/living/setting-up-home-in-austria) explains.

#### Check Your Lease Before You Sign

Many Austrian leases include a clause requiring the tenant to hold household insurance and to show proof. Insurers issue this confirmation on request at no cost, and you can arrange the policy the same day you sign the lease. The regulator, the **FMA**, supervises every Austrian insurer at [fma.gv.at](https://www.fma.gv.at).

## What Does Household Insurance Cover in Austria?

### Usually Covered

- ✓ Fire, smoke, and lightning damage
- ✓ Burglary and theft of contents
- ✓ Water damage (burst pipes, leaks)
- ✓ Storm and hail damage
- ✓ Bundled personal liability (Privathaftpflicht)
- ✓ Glass breakage (often an add-on)

### Usually NOT Covered

- • The building structure itself (owners need Eigenheimversicherung)
- • Flood and earthquake (extended catastrophe add-on)
- • Wear, tear, and gradual damage
- • Intentional damage you cause
- • The car (separate Kfz insurance)
- • Business equipment and stock

Household insurance is really **two products in one**. The **contents cover** pays to repair or replace your belongings after fire, water, theft, or storm, and the bundled **personal liability**pays for damage you cause to other people and their property. Renters need the contents part; the building itself is the landlord's risk.

Watch two limits. **Flood and earthquake** are usually excluded unless you add **extended natural-catastrophe cover**, and the sum insured (Versicherungssumme) must match the real value of your contents, or a large claim can be cut for under-insurance. Owners of a house also need a separate **Eigenheimversicherung** for the structure.

## Does It Cover Dog Liability and Household Members?

Mostly yes. The bundled personal liability in a Haushaltsversicherung covers **family members living in the household**, meaning your **spouse or partner and your children**. Unrelated **flatmates** are usually not covered and may need their own add-on or separate policy. Check the definition of the insured household in the policy wording.

The bundled liability also usually covers **one dog**. That normally satisfies the **mandatory dog-liability rule** that applies in most Austrian provinces, so you may not need a separate policy. Listed breeds (Listenhunde) and a **second dog** often fall outside it. For the provincial rules, minimum sums, and standalone options, see our [dog liability insurance guide](/insurance/dog-liability-insurance).

#### Aim for at Least EUR 1.5 Million Liability

The **Arbeiterkammer** recommends a bundled liability sum of at least **EUR 1.5 million** with worldwide validity. Several tested plans go far higher: **Wiener Staedtische** offers EUR 15 million, **Allianz** up to EUR 15 million on its Max tier, and **Uniqa** up to EUR 10 million. **Generali** is lower at about EUR 2.25 million.

| MUKI Premium | ~EUR 10.30 | EUR 123.95 | Included (confirm sum) | Budget alternative |
| ERGO Plus | ~EUR 12.60 | EUR 151.13 | Included (confirm sum) | Mid-range pick |

| Allianz Max | ~EUR 17.00 | EUR 204.31 | Up to EUR 15 million | Tiered liability limits |
| Wiener Staedtische Extra | ~EUR 19.70 | EUR 236.32 | EUR 15 million | Highest liability cover |
In the **AK Oberoesterreich** November 2025 test, the cheapest plan was **HDI Top-Heimvorteil** at **EUR 122.07 per year** and the most expensive was **Wiener Staedtische Extra** at **EUR 236.32 per year**, both on a **90 square metre** rental flat with a **EUR 200 deductible**. A smaller **40 to 70 square metre** flat costs less, from **around EUR 6 per month** per durchblicker.

Four things move the premium. **Flat size** in square metres is the primary driver, then the **contents sum insured**, your **location and postcode**, and the **deductible (Selbstbehalt)**. Choosing a deductible of **EUR 100 to 300** can cut the premium by roughly **20 to 40 percent**. Optional modules like **glass cover**, extended natural-catastrophe cover, and a higher liability sum add to the price.
