Who Are the Major Mobile Providers in Austria?

Austria has three major mobile network operators that own the physical infrastructure, plus several virtual operators (MVNOs) that use their networks. The big three are:

  • A1 Telekom Austria: The former state monopoly and still the largest provider. Best network coverage, especially in rural and mountainous areas. Premium pricing.
  • Magenta (T-Mobile Austria): Part of Deutsche Telekom. Strong urban coverage and competitive pricing. Also a major internet and TV provider.
  • Drei (3/Hutchison): Known for generous data plans and competitive pricing. Good coverage in urban areas, slightly less reliable in remote Alpine regions.

Popular budget MVNOs include HoT (operated by Hofer supermarket, using the Magenta network), spusu (on the Drei network), yesss! (on A1), and bob (also A1). These offer significantly lower prices with no contract commitment, making them popular with expats. See our SIM card comparison for detailed pricing.

What Are the Best Internet Providers in Austria?

Home internet in Austria is available via fiber (FTTH), cable (coax), DSL, and fixed wireless (LTE/5G). Fiber coverage is expanding rapidly, especially in major cities, but many areas still rely on cable or DSL. The main internet providers are:

  • A1: Largest DSL and fiber provider
  • Magenta: Major cable and fiber provider
  • Drei: Fixed wireless (LTE/5G) home internet
  • Fonira / kabelplus: Regional fiber and cable providers

Prices typically range from 20 to 50 EUR per month depending on speed. See our cost of living guide for how this fits into your overall budget. Basic plans offer 40–100 Mbit/s, while fiber and cable plans can reach 500 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s in supported areas. Most contracts run for 24 months, though some providers offer shorter terms at a higher monthly price. The RTR (Austrian telecom regulator) publishes coverage maps and consumer rights information.
