Insurance in Austria
Last updated: March 2026
As of March 2026, Austria requires all employed residents to have social health insurance (approximately 3.87% of gross salary for employees), pension insurance, and accident insurance, all deducted automatically from wages. Expats should additionally get a Haushaltsversicherung (household plus liability insurance, EUR 10 to EUR 25/month) and, if not employed, voluntary self-insurance with the OGK (approximately EUR 500/month, or EUR 67/month for students).
How Does the Austrian Insurance System Work?
Austria operates on a social insurance model (Sozialversicherung) that is tied to employment. When you start working in Austria, you are automatically enrolled in the social insurance system, which covers health insurance (Krankenversicherung), pension insurance (Pensionsversicherung), and accident insurance (Unfallversicherung). Contributions are split between employer and employee and are deducted directly from your salary.
The system is managed by several insurance carriers depending on your employment type. Most employees are covered by the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (OGK), while self-employed individuals fall under the Social Insurance Institution for the Self-Employed (SVS), and civil servants are covered by BVAEB. For more details, see our health insurance guide. The coverage is broadly the same across all carriers, covering doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, and basic dental care.

What Should Expats Know About Insurance in Austria?
- •If you are employed, your health insurance is automatic. You do not need to sign up separately.
- •If you are not employed (such as a student or freelancer), you must arrange your own health insurance coverage, either through voluntary self-insurance with the OGK or a private provider. You will need a Meldezettel (residence registration) to apply.
- •Liability insurance is not legally required for individuals in Austria, but it is strongly recommended as per the Austrian Insurance Association (VVO), as you can be held personally liable for damages you cause to others.
- •Many Austrian Haushaltsversicherung (household insurance) policies bundle liability coverage, making them an efficient two-in-one solution.
