Vienna Registration Guide

Last updated: March 2026

As of March 2026, EU/EEA citizens moving to Vienna must register their residence (Meldezettel) within 3 days of arrival and apply for an Anmeldebescheinigung within 4 months, which costs 15 EUR at MA 35. You need a landlord-signed Meldezettel form, a valid passport, and proof of health insurance and financial means. This guide covers the entire process step by step, from securing housing to obtaining your Tax ID via FinanzOnline.

1

What Do You Need Before Arriving in Vienna?

Your very first priority, even before you land in Austria, is to have a confirmed place to live. The signature of your landlord or the main tenant is an essential part of the Meldezettel form. Without it, you cannot complete your residence registration.

Don't skip this

You cannot register (Meldezettel) without a landlord or main tenant signing the form. A hotel or Airbnb address will not work. Make sure your rental contract is signed before you arrive, or arrange for the landlord to be available to sign the Meldezettel promptly.

How Do You Register Your Meldezettel After Arrival?

    Religion field = Church tax

If you indicate a religion on the Meldezettel, you will be required to pay church tax (Kirchensteuer), roughly 1.1% of your income. If you do not wish to pay this, leave the religion field blank or write "o.B." (ohne Bekenntnis, without denomination).
  3. 3

    Birth certificate optional

Not required for EU citizens but may be requested.

  4. 4

    Proof of academic titles optional

While at the registration office, ask the staff about obtaining your Tax ID. They can advise on the process or point you to the right Finanzamt.

What Are the Next Steps After Registration?

A

Deregister from Your Home Country's Social Security

To avoid an overlap between your home country's social security system and Austria's social security (Sozialversicherung), you need to formally deregister. Use the Annex 19 form(also known as the A1 portable document for social security coordination) or contact your home country's social security authority directly.

Important

If you don't deregister, you may end up paying double social security contributions in both your home country and Austria.
B

Tax ID: Register on FinanzOnline

Once your Meldezettel is completed, register on FinanzOnline , Austria's online tax portal. You will need this to file your annual tax return (Arbeitnehmerveranlagung) and to receive your salary properly.

After registration, your access credentials will be sent by post to your registered address, which is why completing the Meldezettel first is essential.
