Internet Providers in Austria: In-Depth Research (2026)

Jules de Bruin

Updated: May 3 2026 | Found helpful by 9 others

Updated May 2026. Austria's internet market is no longer one market: it is three overlapping layers of retail brand, underlying access network, and address-specific technology. RTR reports about 14.8 million broadband connections at end-2024 (18.6% fixed, 81.4% mobile). The cheapest fixed-line plan is VOLhighspeed DSL 33 at EUR 16.90/month; the fastest is Magenta Internet XXL at 2,000 Mbit/s. Best transparent power-user FTTH: Telematica Next Home Plus 1000. Best no-minimum-term home internet: spusu 5G Home. Open-access fibre platforms öGIG and Kelag-Connect host 20+ retail ISPs across multiple federal states.

Find your best offer

What does the Austrian internet market look like in 2026?

A useful comparison engine has to model three different layers separately: the retail brand the user recognises, the underlying access network actually delivering the service, and the address-specific technology chosen at checkout. RTR reports Austria had roughly 14.8 million broadband connections at end-2024, of which 18.6% were fixed and 81.4% were mobile.

Retail supply is not just "A1 vs Magenta vs Drei." The market also includes strong regional cable/fibre operators, mobile resellers, and open-access fibre networks that let many ISPs sell over the same infrastructure. A single customer journey can involve a network operator (Kelag-Connect or öGIG), a retail ISP (Telematica, Drei, spusu), an access technology (GPON FTTH), an ISP-supplied router, and activation timing tied to network handover.

The biggest practical finding is that comparison portals usually under-model Austrian internet offers. Common misses include normal speeds under EU/TSM rules, hardware ownership versus loan, no-roaming rules on home-internet SIM products, bundle-only discounts, open-access dependence, address-based technology substitution, and traffic-management caveats.

Who provides internet in Austria?

The verified live universe maps to 13+ active providers for residential internet:

  • A1: nationwide incumbent. Fixed/FTTH up to 1 Gbit/s plus 5G Cube wireless. Sub-brand B.free for prepaid 5G.
  • Magenta: HFC cable from 60 to 2,000 Mbit/s plus 5G home from 60 to 300 Mbit/s. Says it has more than 4,300 5G-capable sites.
  • Drei: address-selected 5G, fixed-line, or fibre. Says ~95% household and business reach with 5G by end-2025; ~25% via fibre partnerships.
  • spusu: nationally available 5G home tariffs on the Drei network with no minimum term.
  • Telematica: nationwide retailer with unusually transparent fixed-line and GPON pricing. Optional static IP.
  • LIWEST: dominant cable network in Upper Austria, with mobile PowerNet add-on.
  • kabelplus: open-access fibre and cable in Lower Austria and Burgenland.
  • Salzburg AG CableLink: regional Salzburg cable and fibre.
  • IKB: Innsbruck/Tyrol fibre, fallback, and mobile internet via Hutchison Drei.
  • VOLhighspeed: Vorarlberg DSL and symmetric FTTH up to 1 Gbit/s.
  • Value brands: bob (A1), HoT (Magenta), B.free (A1), yesss!, educom.
  • Open-access platforms: öGIG hosts 20+ retail ISPs (Spusu, Drei, Fonira, Telematica, kapper.net, Net4You and others). Kelag-Connect operates similarly in Carinthia.

How do A1, Magenta, and Drei compare?

A1 covers the broadest footprint: address check selects fibre, fixed copper, or 5G Cube. FTTH 250/500/1000 tiers come with an A1 bandwidth guarantee. Cube tariffs are EUR 32.90 to 47.90/month with 6 months free promo and EUR 29.90 hardware.

Magenta publishes the clearest tariff matrix: HFC cable from EUR 29.90 (60 Mbit/s) to EUR 99.90 (2 Gbit/s), plus 5G home from EUR 29.90 (60 Mbit/s) to EUR 47.90 (300 Mbit/s). Mobile-home tariffs explicitly state no roaming and no voice/SMS. The 5G Box becomes customer property after activation.

Drei markets address-selected Home and Boost! products via 5G, fixed-line, or fibre. DataNet tariffs (no binding) sit at EUR 24.90 to 29.90/month. Boost! positioning adds optimisation, monitoring, and proactive troubleshooting on top.

Which regional providers matter outside Vienna?

LIWEST dominates Upper Austrian cable and runs PowerNet 5G fixed wireless Austria-wide. kabelplus fiberplus serves Niederösterreich and Burgenland with symmetric FTTH (150/75 to 600/300 Mbit/s) and a 25%-off promo until 31 May 2026. Salzburg AG CableLink covers Salzburg with cable from 60 to 500 Mbit/s plus a 1 Gbit/s fibre tier. IKB serves Innsbruck and Tyrol with FTTH up to 350 Mbit/s symmetric, FRITZ!Box loan during build-out, and a EUR 5 combo discount for IKB/TIWAG energy customers. VOLhighspeed serves Vorarlberg with DSL from EUR 16.90/month and symmetric FTTH up to 1 Gbit/s.

How does open-access fibre work in Austria?

On open-access fibre, the network operator and the retail ISP are two different companies. The user pays monthly to the chosen ISP, while the network operator supplies the active component and physical line. öGIG publishes a list of more than 20 retail ISPs on its platform, including Spusu, Drei, Fonira, Telematica, kapper.net, AiNet, KT-NET, Net4You, oja.at, NETcompany, and others. Kelag-Connect follows the same logic in Carinthia, with open-access fibre rollout running since 2019.

Practical implication: a single address can have a Kelag-Connect or öGIG fibre line, with the user choosing between Telematica, Spusu, Drei, or another partner ISP. The bill comes from the ISP, not the network operator.

Are mobile/5G home plans real fixed-line replacements?

Sometimes. A1 Cube, Magenta 5G, Drei Home, spusu 5G Home, B.free Data Unlimited, bob Giga bob, HoT, and IKB Fiber Flex are sold as home internet but ride on 4G/5G mobile networks. They are best when fixed-line installation is impossible, when the user wants no minimum term, or when the address has weak DOCSIS/FTTH coverage but strong 5G.

The trade-offs are real: no use abroad, no voice or SMS on most tariffs, no static IPv4 (IKB explicitly), and throughput tied to radio conditions. Magenta references a Bandbreitenoptimierung policy and assigns customers to traffic categories on mobile-home tariffs.

What are the real-world traps to watch for?

Hardware ownership vs loan

Magentasays its 5G Box becomes the customer's property. IKB uses temporary loan FRITZ!Boxes during line build-out. LIWESTpublishes a EUR 39.90 modem-provisioning fee. Treat "router included" as a non-uniform field.

No-roaming and no-voice rules

Magenta mobile-home tariffs do not support roaming or voice/SMS. A1 Cube is Austria-only. Drei Home and spusu 5G Home explicitly say no abroad use. If the user travels with the router, the tariff is the wrong product.

Address-based technology substitution

Drei and A1 say openly that the actual technology depends on the address. Same brand, same plan name, can mean different speeds and different SLA guarantees at different addresses. The address check is part of the purchase, not optional.

Open-access dependence

On Kelag-Connect or öGIG fibre, the bill comes from the chosen ISP, but the line is built by a different operator. Activation timing, fault repair, and contract terms split across two companies. The user must understand both relationships.

How is Austrian internet quality regulated?

The Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH (RTR) regulates the Austrian telecom market, operates RTR-NetTest for measured quality, publishes annual broadband market reports, and runs telecom dispute resolution. RTR reports 1,584 telecom dispute cases in 2025 with an average disputed amount of EUR 375.

At EU level, the Telecoms Single Market (TSM) regulation requires fixed-internet providers to disclose normally available, minimum, and advertised speeds, and gives consumers the right to remedies when actual performance materially under-delivers.

Customer satisfaction signals are mixed. On Trustpilot, the largest incumbents score poorly: A1 ~1.3/5, Magenta ~1.5/5, Drei ~1.4/5. Challengers do much better: spusu ~4.4/5, educom ~4.0. Use ratings as one dimension among many, not as the ranking driver.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest internet plan in Austria?

VOLhighspeed DSL 33 at EUR 16.90/month is among the cheapest fixed-line entry plans. For mobile-style home internet, bob Giga bob Unlimited 40 at EUR 18.90/month and HoT Internet at EUR 19.90/month per 30 days prepaid sit at the bottom of the price ladder.

Which Austrian internet plans have no minimum term?

Plans without a minimum term include Drei DataNet, spusu 5G Home (L/XL/XXL), B.free Data Unlimited, bob Giga bob, HoT Internet, IKB Fiber Flex 10, LIWEST Mobil PowerNet, and Telematica Next Home 33. Most are mobile/5G fixed wireless or prepaid products.

Are 5G home internet plans in Austria really unlimited?

Headline data is unlimited, but Magenta references a Bandbreitenoptimierung policy on its mobile home tariffs and assigns customers to traffic categories. A1 Cube and Drei Home explicitly say throughput depends on radio conditions and load. None of the major 5G home tariffs allow voice, SMS, or roaming abroad.

What is the fastest residential internet in Austria?

Magenta Internet XXL via cable reaches 2,000 Mbit/s download. Telematica Next Home Plus 1000 (GPON FTTH), A1 Glasfaser Internet 1000, VOLhighspeed Fiber 1000, and Salzburg AG CableLink Fiber all reach 1 Gbit/s. VOLhighspeed Fiber 1000 also offers symmetric 1 Gbit/s upload.

Which providers cover regions outside Vienna?

LIWEST is the dominant cable network in Upper Austria. kabelplus fiberplus serves Niederösterreich and Burgenland. Salzburg AG CableLink covers Salzburg. IKB serves Innsbruck and Tyrol. VOLhighspeed serves Vorarlberg. Open-access fibre platforms öGIG and Kelag-Connect host more than 20 retail ISPs across multiple federal states.

What is the difference between a network operator and a reseller in Austria?

A network operator owns or controls the access infrastructure (A1, Magenta, Drei, LIWEST, kabelplus, Salzburg AG, IKB). A reseller or MVNO buys capacity from one of those networks and bills the customer directly. spusu, bob, HoT, IKB Fiber Flex, and educom resell on either Drei, A1, or Magenta networks.

Do Austrian internet plans include a router?

Magenta includes a Fiber-Box on cable plans and a 5G Box on mobile plans, with the 5G Box becoming customer property. A1 Cube charges EUR 29.90 for the 5G Cube. LIWEST charges a EUR 39.90 modem-provisioning fee. IKB lends a FRITZ!Box during fibre build-out and charges EUR 59 for hardware. Telematica includes a router with all Next Home plans at no extra cost.

How is internet quality regulated in Austria?

RTR (Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH) regulates the Austrian telecom market and operates RTR-NetTest for measured quality. EU Telecoms Single Market (TSM) rules require providers to disclose normally available, minimum, and advertised speeds. RTR also runs a dispute-resolution body that handled 1,584 telecom cases in 2025.

Limitations and Open Questions

This research is rigorous on current public retail offers, but it is not a perfect full census of every plan sold over every open-access fibre network in Austria. The biggest missing items are: complete scraped tariffs for every partner ISP on öGIG and Kelag-Connect, comprehensive Austrian-localised Starlink pricing, universal IPv6 disclosure, public peering/transit maps, public churn rates, and consistently disclosed plan-level jitter or normal-speed figures for every provider.

Some providers expose headline speeds and prices on HTML pages, but reserve normally available speeds, minimum speeds, latency, service-class rules, and legal remedies for product-information sheets, contract summaries, or PDFs. Those should be ingested into a production dataset alongside HTML.
