Just arrived: go prepaid

Prepaid SIM cards are cheaper (from €2.90 / month), contract-free, require no credit check or Meldezettel, and cap your spending. That makes prepaid the default for anyone who has just arrived and cannot yet prove an address. You can switch to a contract later and keep your number.

Just visiting Austria?

You do not need an Austrian SIM. A travel eSIM like Airalo activates in minutes with no Austrian ID. See our best eSIM for Austria guide or get an Airalo eSIM.

Based on pricing, network coverage, ease of activation for new arrivals, and overall value, here are the top 5 prepaid providers in Austria as of April 2026.

What Is the Difference Between Prepaid and Postpaid SIM Cards in Austria?

The core difference is simple: prepaid means you pay before you use (top up credit or buy a monthly bundle), while postpaid means you pay after you use (monthly bill via direct debit from your bank account). In Austria, this distinction determines what documents you need, how much flexibility you have, and how much you pay.

Austria's telecom market is regulated by the RTR (Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH). Since 2019, all SIM cards (both prepaid and postpaid) must be registered with a valid ID document. EU roaming is included on all plans at no extra charge. See our Austrian telecom overview for the full market structure.

Austrian SIM or travel eSIM: two ways to get online.

How Do Prepaid SIM Cards Work in Austria?

Prepaid SIM cards in Austria are the easiest way to get connected. You buy a SIM at a supermarket (Hofer, Spar, Lidl), electronics store, or provider shop, register it with your passport, and activate it online. No Meldezettel, no bank account, no credit check, no contract.

  • Documents needed: Passport or EU national ID only
  • Commitment: None , cancel or stop topping up anytime
  • Spending control: You can only spend what you have loaded , no surprise bills
  • Price range: €2.90 – 25/month depending on data
  • Activation: Same day , buy and use immediately

Best for people who just arrived

Prepaid is the recommended first step for all residents arriving in Austria. Get a HoT SIM at Hofer or a spusu SIM on day one while you sort out your Meldezettel and bank account. See our full SIM card guide for detailed provider comparisons.

How Do Postpaid (Contract) SIM Cards Work in Austria?

Postpaid plans (Vertrag) in Austria are monthly contracts where you receive a bill at the end of each month, paid via direct debit (Lastschrift) from your Austrian bank account. These plans offer more data, 5G access, and sometimes a subsidized phone, but come with obligations.

  • Documents needed: Passport + Meldezettel + Austrian bank account
  • Commitment: Typically 24 months (auto-renews if not cancelled)
  • Cancellation: Must cancel in writing before contract end; early exit fees apply
  • Price range: €15 – 60/month depending on data and phone subsidy
  • Activation: 1–3 business days (credit check + setup)

Watch out for auto-renewal

Austrian postpaid contracts auto-renew (Vertragsverlängerung) if you do not cancel in writing before the minimum term ends. Set a calendar reminder 3 months before your contract expires. The Arbeiterkammer offers free advice on contract disputes.

Our own calculation from our tariff catalogue: price × payments in 365 days (calendar month 12, 30 days 12.17, 4 weeks or 28 days 13.04). Excludes SIM fees, promotions and indexation. Prices as of October 2026, verify on the provider site.

At the same €9.90 sticker, A1 B.free S, billed every 4 weeks, costs €129.05 a year, while A1 SIMply Family, billed per calendar month, costs €118.80. That is €10.25 more for the same advertised price, a whole extra month.

Austrian tariffs bill on three different cycles, and the advertised price hides which one. A 4-week or 28-day tariff charges 13.04 times a year, a 30-day tariff 12.17 times, and a calendar-month plan 12 times. The operator prepaid lines, A1 B.free and Magenta KLAX, bill every 4 weeks; supermarket SIMs such as HoT bill every 30 days; spusu, yesss! and Drei up bill per calendar month.

So prepaid is not automatically cheaper per year. A monthly no-commitment plan at the same sticker price beats a 4-week prepaid tariff by close to one month's fee. The table above is computed from our tariff catalogue, so it moves with every price change; the claim line under it names the current gap.

Always normalise before comparing

Multiply the price by the payments a year, then divide by 12. That gives the per-calendar-month figure you can compare with a monthly plan.

Source: provider terms and our September 2026 mobile research. Indexation figures: heute.at, 15 March 2026.

Austria has a third option between prepaid and contract, and it is the one most residents end up on: a monthly plan with no minimum term. Drei up, spusu, yesss! and A1 SIMply bill per calendar month and can be cancelled monthly, so they avoid both the 13th payment of a 4-week prepaid tariff and the 24-month lock-in of a contract.

Contracts carry a cost prepaid never does: indexation. In April 2026 A1 and Magenta raised running contracts by about 3.5% in line with inflation, and Drei by up to about 6.5%, while spusu, HoT and yesss! did not index, as heute.at and Der Standard reported in March 2026. A contract price is therefore a starting price.

What residents report

  • + HoT fix after several years: A long-time user describes HoT fix as a plan that has run for years without trouble and that can be dropped at any time; for work the same person carries an A1 SIM. (r/Austria, 2025)
  • ○ HoT and yesss! side by side: Two friends signed up on the same day, one with yesss!, one with HoT, at about the same price. Over the years HoT kept adding data at no extra cost, while the yesss! plan stayed as it was. (r/Austria, 2025)

When Should Residents Switch From Prepaid to Postpaid?

Most residents should start with prepaid and consider switching to postpaid only after meeting all of these conditions:

  1. 1

    You have a Meldezettel

Required for all postpaid contracts. See our Vienna registration guide.

  2. 2

You have an Austrian bank account

Postpaid bills are paid via direct debit (Lastschrift). See how to open a bank account.

  3. 3

You plan to stay at least 2 years

Contracts are typically 24 months. If you might leave Austria sooner, prepaid avoids early termination fees.

  4. 4

You need a subsidised phone or a monthly invoice

Postpaid offers subsidised phones and a monthly invoice with VAT. Prepaid now reaches unlimited data too, so data alone is no reason to switch.

Number portability is free

You can port your prepaid phone number to a new postpaid contract for free. The process takes 1–3 business days. Your Austrian phone number is tied to ID Austria, banking, and other services , always keep it when switching.
