An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM chip built directly into your phone. Instead of inserting a physical card, you activate your plan by scanning a QR code or downloading a carrier profile. The eSIM connects to the mobile network just like a physical SIM, but entirely digitally.

Most modern smartphones support eSIM, including iPhone (XS and later), Samsung Galaxy (S20 and later), Google Pixel (3a and later), and many others. Some phones support dual eSIM, allowing two digital SIMs simultaneously without any physical card.

All three Austrian network operators and most budget brands now sell an eSIM with an Austrian +43 number, calls and SMS. HoT activates one in the HoT app for new customers, and existing customers switch from a plastic SIM in the app or in Mein HoT, keeping their number (HoT, October 2026). Drei sells its eSIM through the up app, and the eSIM profile is free.

Check your device before you order. spusu lists devices its eSIM does not support, among them the Apple Watch, Google Pixel 4a and Pixel 6 Pro (spusu, September 2026). If you move the eSIM to a new phone, you deactivate the old profile in the customer portal and request a new QR code, because one profile never runs on two devices.

Two more brands round out the list. LIWEST Mobil sells an eSIM on the Magenta network, aimed at Upper Austria. bob no longer exists: A1 closed the brand on 12 July 2026, so yesss! is the budget alternative on the A1 network.

Magenta is the exception for newcomers. Its eSIM page says you need a Magenta contract, so a new KLAX prepaid customer starts on a physical SIM. A1 sells all three B.free Wertkarte tariffs as an eSIM, from €9.90 per 4 weeks for 50 GB to €29.90 for unlimited data. Coverage follows the network, from Vienna and Graz to the ski resorts of Tyrol and Vorarlberg.
