Car Leasing vs Car Loan in Austria (2026)

Updated: | Found helpful by 7 others
Lease or loan
Leasing buys a lower instalment, not a cheaper car. On a €30,000 car over 48 months, Porsche Bank’s own example costs €338.79 a month but €35,302.93 in total with the residual value. With the same €6,000 down, a loan at bank99’s 7.50% effective costs €577.54 a month and €1,581 less overall. Paying cash is cheapest.
Ending a lease early
A residual-value lease without a purchase right can be ended at any time under § 41 Abs. 7 VKrG 2026. You pay the open instalments and the residual value, minus the unused interest and the car’s value at return. From 20 November 2026 a lease with a purchase option also gets the 14-day withdrawal right, which the old act denied it.
How Much Does Leasing Cost Compared With a Loan or Cash?
| Over 48 months | Lease (Porsche Bank) | Loan (bank99) | Cash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid upfront | €6,000.00 (VZ-Depot) | €6,000.00 (own money) | €30,000.00 |
| Monthly | €338.79 | €577.54 | €0 |
| Contract fee | €183.66 | Inside the 7.50% rate | €0 |
| Residual at month 48 | €12,857.14 (buy it, or settle against the car) | €0 | €0 |
| Total paid | €35,302.93 | €33,721.98 | €30,000.00 |
| Above the €30,000 price | €5,302.93 | €3,721.98 | €0 |
| True cost at month 48, incl. forgone savings | €36,418.45 | €35,226.60 | €32,326.77 |
| Compulsory Vollkasko, if you would not buy it anyway | + about €2,400 to €4,800 | Your choice | Your choice |
Our calculation, 12 October 2026. Lease: the representative example in Porsche Bank’s information sheet under § 9 VKrG 2026 (€35,000, €7,000 VZ-Depot, €15,000 residual, 6.67% nominal, 7.79% effective, €395.26 a month, €214.27 contract fee), scaled linearly to €30,000. Loan: bank99’s published 7.50% effective rate applied as an annuity to €24,000 over 48 months; its own example is €10,000 over 60 months. Forgone savings: every payment compounded to month 48 at 2.60% (Scalable Capital Tagesgeld, 1 September 2026) after 27.5% KESt, so 1.885% a year. The car’s value at month 48 is the same in all three columns and cancels out. The Vollkasko band is a research estimate, not a quote.
On a €30,000 car kept 48 months, the lease costs €5,302.93 above the price, the loan €3,721.98, and cash nothing but forgone interest of about €2,327. The lease is €1,581 dearer than the loan on paper and €1,192 dearer once every payment is valued at the same savings rate. What it buys is a monthly figure €238.75 lower.
The reason is the balloon. A lease finances less each month, but the €12,857.14 residual stays outstanding for the full term and earns interest all along. The Sozialministerium makes the same point in its leasing guide: a lease can show a lower effective rate than a loan and still cost more in total, because the effective-rate formula discounts payments due later. Compare the total amount payable, not just the percentage.
Returning the car instead of buying it does not change the arithmetic. On a residual-value lease you guarantee the €12,857.14: if the dealer sells the car for less, you pay the gap, and if it sells for more, you are owed the difference. Economically you carry the depreciation risk of an owner without holding the title. If you would not otherwise insure a €30,000 car comprehensively, the compulsory Vollkasko widens the gap by roughly €2,400 to €4,800 over the term.

Porsche Bank is the only Austrian lessor in our research that publishes a complete worked example. Its new sheet under § 9 VKrG 2026 prices residual-value leasing at 6.67% nominal and 7.79% effective, with no arrangement fee and a statutory contract fee of €214.27. The conditions it published on 20 May 2026 were higher, at 7.09% nominal and 8.39 to 8.56% effective on a variable rate.
The variable rate follows the 3-month EURIBOR. According to the product page, a move of more than 0.25 percentage points changes your instalment from the first day of the next quarter. The down payment is capped at 30% of the gross base price. The bank offers four residual-value variants: plain, with a fixed Depot, with a VZ-Depot that is used up over the term, and with a down payment.
Two things on the sheet deserve a second read. First, the example’s total of €41,186.75 is €6,186.75 above the car’s €35,000 price, and that is before insurance. Second, a fixed Depot is usually unremunerated. The Sozialministerium calls this a hidden financing cost: money you hand over at signing earns nothing for four years and also removes the low-rate advantage you leased for.
Restwertleasing or Kilometerleasing: Who Carries the Residual-Value Risk?
| Model | Who carries the value risk | Settled at the end | Early exit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restwertleasing | You, in full | Sale price or valuation against the agreed residual: you pay the gap or get the surplus | Any time, settled against the car's value |
| Kilometerleasing | You, through the back door | Extra kilometres and a worse condition class than agreed | Per contract |
| Mietleasing (Porsche Bank) | The lessor | Return only | Only with the bank's consent |

Most Austrian private leases are Restwertleasing. The contract fixes a calculated residual value at signing, and at the end the sale price or a valuation is set against it. The Sozialministerium explains why the gap lands on you: the residual is the amount still missing to cover the lessor’s purchase price, funding, administration and profit. A residual set too high keeps the instalment low and hands you the bill at month 48.
Kilometerleasing sounds safer and often is not. The rate is calculated on a total mileage and an agreed condition class, and you pay at the end for extra kilometres or a worse condition. Because a used car’s value depends mainly on mileage and condition, the ministry concludes that these models also amount to residual-value liability in economic terms. Read the condition catalogue before you sign, not at the handover.
On the 20 May 2026 conditions, Porsche Bank allowed 2,500 km above the contract mileage without a penalty and credited under-used kilometres up to 10,000 km. Stone chips up to 2 mm counted as normal wear. Insist on a written handover protocol with photos, because the return inspection is where most leasing disputes start. The only product that truly removes the value risk is Mietleasing, and you pay for that with a contract you cannot leave without the bank’s consent.
What Does It Cost to End a Car Lease Early?
| Contract type (§ 41 Abs. 1) | Can you leave early? | What you owe |
|---|---|---|
| Z 1: you must buy the car | Yes, by buying early (§ 41 Abs. 4) | Open payments, reduced for the shorter term |
| Z 2: lessor can make you buy | Yes (§ 41 Abs. 5) | Reduced payments; if you return the car, also minus its value at return |
| Z 3: purchase option at a set price | Yes, you declare buy or return (§ 41 Abs. 6) | Same as Z 2 |
| Z 4: residual value guaranteed, no purchase right | Yes, any time (§ 41 Abs. 7) | What a Z 2 or Z 3 lessee would owe on early return |
§ 41 VKrG 2026, BGBl. I Nr. 36/2026, for contracts signed from 20 November 2026; the same mechanics sat in § 26 Abs. 4 to 7 of the old act.
You can always get out, but it is the most expensive moment of a lease. On early termination you owe the open instalments plus the residual value, reduced by the interest and other term-dependent costs you no longer use. If you return the car, its value at return is deducted as well. That deduction is exactly where the risk sits: a two-year-old car sold in a weak market can fall well short of the line in the contract.
Porsche Bank states it plainly: a residual-value contract can be ended in writing at any time, and the difference between its settlement value and the used-car proceeds is billed to you. Before you hand back the keys, ask for the settlement figure in writing and get an independent valuation. The lessor must state the calculation basis in the contract under § 41 Abs. 5 to 7 VKrG 2026, so you can check its arithmetic.
A car loan is cheaper to leave. Under § 29 VKrG 2026, which keeps the old § 16 caps, early repayment of a variable-rate loan costs €0, and a fixed-rate loan costs at most 1% of the amount repaid, or 0.5% with under a year to run. Up to €10,000 every 12 months is free either way, and you can sell the car yourself.
Do You Need Vollkasko on a Leased Car?
Yes in practice: the leasing company owns the car and requires comprehensive cover. Porsche Bank puts Kasko, Haftpflicht and the motor-related insurance tax on the lessee, and its 20 May 2026 conditions coupled Vollkasko and service to the lease. Our research estimates the extra at €600 to €1,200 a year against a policy you would choose yourself. That is an estimate, not a quote.
From 20 November 2026 the coupling gets weaker. § 14 Abs. 4 VKrG 2026 lets a lender require insurance linked to the credit, but it must accept an equivalent policy from another insurer and may not change the credit terms because you did. Lender and insurer must give you at least 3 days to compare offers that stay fixed for that period. Applying this to Vollkasko on a lease is our reading of the act, and no court has tested it yet.
Ask one more question before you sign: what happens after a total loss? A Vollkasko policy pays the car’s current value, while the lease settles against the residual and open instalments. In the first years the second figure can be higher. A GAP cover closes that difference. Check whether it is included before you buy it twice.
Negotiate the price before the lease
Is the NoVA Included in the Leasing Rate?
Yes, indirectly. The Normverbrauchsabgabe (NoVA) is a one-off, CO2-based tax on the first registration of a car in Austria under the NoVAG 1991. On a dealer sale the supplying business owes it (§ 4 Z 1 NoVAG). It is therefore part of the vehicle price the leasing company pays, and your rate and residual are calculated on that price.
Two consequences follow. A car with high CO2 emissions carries a higher NoVA, a higher financed amount and therefore a higher instalment, even if the list price looks similar. And because the NoVA itself is excluded from its own tax base (§ 5 Abs. 3 NoVAG), comparing two dealers’ offers only works on the same basis: ask both for the price including NoVA and VAT.
Zero-emission cars pay no NoVA under § 3 Abs. 1 Z 1 NoVAG, which is one reason electric cars lease cheaply relative to their list price. The rate formula changes year by year, so we do not quote a percentage here. Use the NoVA page on the Unternehmensserviceportal for the current calculation before you compare offers.
What Changes for Car Leases on 20 November 2026?
| Rule | Old VKrG (to 19 Nov 2026) | VKrG 2026 (from 20 Nov 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Leases treated as credit | § 26 Abs. 1: purchase duty, lessor's purchase demand, option plus value guarantee, or value guarantee | § 41 Abs. 1: purchase duty, lessor's purchase demand, purchase option at a set price, or value guarantee |
| 14-day withdrawal | Not for Z 3 or Z 4 leases (§ 26 Abs. 3) | Only Z 4 excluded (§ 41 Abs. 3): option leases now get it |
| Product name on the form | No rule | Z 4 must be called “Restwertleasing ohne Ankaufsrecht” (§ 41 Abs. 7) |
| Residual-value risk disclosed | Before signing and in the contract (§ 26 Abs. 2) | Unchanged (§ 41 Abs. 2) |
| Insurance from another provider | No rule in the act | Must be accepted if equivalent; 3 days to compare (§ 14 Abs. 4) |
| Creditworthiness | Check and warn (§ 7) | No lease after a negative check (§ 17 Abs. 6) |
| Contracts covered | Signed to 19 Nov 2026 | Signed from 20 Nov 2026 (§ 45) |
Old act: VKrG, RIS consolidated version. New act: VKrG 2026, BGBl. I Nr. 36/2026, published 10 June 2026. Both read on RIS on 12 October 2026.
Consumer leases with a purchase or value-guarantee clause were already credit under the old § 26 VKrG, so 20 November is not the day leasing enters consumer-credit law. What changes is who gets which right. Under the new § 41 VKrG 2026, a lease with a purchase option at a set price counts as credit even without a value guarantee, and it now carries the 14-day withdrawal right and the consumer termination right. The old act either did not cover such a lease or excluded withdrawal (§ 26 Abs. 3).
The classic residual-value lease without a purchase right stays outside withdrawal (§ 41 Abs. 3), but it must now be labelled “Restwertleasing ohne Ankaufsrecht” on the standard information form and in the contract. That label tells you at a glance that you guarantee the residual, that you cannot withdraw, and that you can still terminate at any time under § 41 Abs. 7.
The rest of the new act reaches leasing too, because § 39 Abs. 1 applies its credit rules to financing aids. Since § 17 Abs. 6 makes a lease after a negative creditworthiness check unlawful, and since Porsche Bank’s new sheet already says a contract requires a positive check, expect a fuller look at your income and outgoings than a dealer form used to involve. Contracts signed before 20 November 2026 stay under the old act (§ 45).

When Does Leasing Beat a Car Loan?
| Your situation | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New car every 3 to 4 years, steady mileage | Lease | Lowest monthly figure and no resale work at the end |
| Keeping the car 5 years or longer | Loan | The balloon interest stops when the loan does; the car stays yours |
| Driving 20,000 km a year or more | Loan | No mileage line and no condition class at the end |
| Savings that earn less than 7.50% | Cash | Forgone interest of about €2,327 beats any financing cost here |
| Job or move might force an exit | Loan | €0 to 1% to repay early, and you sell the car yourself |
| Car used in your business | Lease, check with an adviser | Operational use can be deductible; private use cannot |
Leasing wins one contest cleanly: the monthly figure. If you replace the car every 3 to 4 years, keep to the mileage and want no resale hassle, a lease spends roughly €238.75 a month less than a loan on our €30,000 example. The Sozialministerium names exactly that case as the one where a lease can make sense.
The loan wins on most of the rest. Over 48 months it is €1,581 cheaper in our example, it has no mileage line, and leaving early costs €0 on a variable rate. Cash beats both whenever your savings earn less than the financing rate, which at 2.60% before tax against 7.50% to 7.79% they do.
The tax argument rarely applies to you. A widespread belief holds that leasing carries tax advantages, but private lessees cannot deduct their instalments, so for a private car the two are equal for tax purposes. Only operational business use changes that picture, and that is a question for a tax adviser, not a dealer.
Which Rules Protect You When You Lease a Car?
| Law | § 41 VKrG 2026 on consumer leasing, from 20 November 2026; before that, § 26 VKrG. |
|---|---|
| Regulator | FMA, credit section for banks such as Porsche Bank; the trade authorities for other lessors (§ 43 VKrG 2026). |
| Free tool | AK Bankenrechner for the loan side of the comparison, and the NoVA guidance on usp.gv.at. |
| Your right | A residual-value lease without a purchase right can be terminated at any time (§ 41 Abs. 7), and a lease with a purchase option gains a 14-day withdrawal right (§ 25 with § 41 Abs. 3), for contracts signed from 20 November 2026. |
A lease dispute runs the same route as a loan dispute. Write to the lessor first. If the lessor is a bank, the Gemeinsame Schlichtungsstelle handles it free of charge. The FMA supervises the bank but does not award you money, and the Arbeiterkammer advises members on return protocols and settlement bills.
If the instalments are already a strain, talk to a state-recognised debt counselling service at schuldenberatung.at before you terminate. Under § 31 VKrG 2026, a lender must offer reasonable forbearance before enforcing a contract signed from 20 November 2026, such as a longer term or a payment break.
Car Leasing in Austria: Frequently Asked Questions
Is leasing cheaper than a car loan in Austria?
Not on total cost. Scaled to a €30,000 car over 48 months, Porsche Bank’s own representative example (6.67% nominal, 7.79% effective) adds up to €35,302.93 including the residual. The same car with €6,000 down and a loan at bank99’s published 7.50% effective costs €33,721.98. Leasing wins on the monthly figure: €338.79 against €577.54.
Can I end a car lease early in Austria?
Yes. A residual-value lease without a purchase right can be terminated at any time under § 41 Abs. 7 VKrG 2026, as it could under § 26 Abs. 7 of the old act. You owe the open instalments and the residual value, reduced by the interest you no longer use and by the car’s value at return. Porsche Bank bills the difference between its settlement value and the used-car proceeds.
Do I have to take the leasing company's Vollkasko?
You have to insure the car comprehensively, but from 20 November 2026 the lessor may not force its own policy on you. § 14 Abs. 4 VKrG 2026 requires a lender to accept an equivalent policy from another insurer, without changing the credit terms, and to give you at least 3 days to compare. Applying this to Vollkasko on a lease is our reading of the act, not yet tested in court.
Does Kilometerleasing remove the residual-value risk?
Less than it looks. The Sozialministerium points out that a used car’s value depends mainly on its condition and mileage, so a mileage model that bills extra kilometres and a worse condition class still amounts to residual-value liability. Porsche Bank’s risk-free product is Mietleasing, which ends early only with the bank’s consent.
Can a private person deduct leasing instalments from tax in Austria?
No. Private lessees cannot deduct leasing instalments, so for a private car leasing and a loan are equal for tax purposes. The tax argument only applies to a business that uses the car operationally.
Who pays the NoVA on a leased car?
The NoVA is a one-off tax on the first registration of a car in Austria. On a dealer sale the supplying business owes it (§ 4 Z 1 NoVAG), and on registration the registered keeper does (§ 4 Z 2). Either way it is part of the vehicle price the leasing company finances, so it sits inside your rate. Zero-emission cars are exempt under § 3 Abs. 1 Z 1 NoVAG.
How Did We Calculate This?
The lease column is Porsche Bank’s own representative example, scaled from €35,000 to €30,000. Every figure in that example is proportional to the price, so scaling keeps the rate, the 20% upfront share and the 42.9% residual share unchanged. We did not invent a residual value. The loan column applies bank99’s published 7.50% effective rate, which already includes its account fee, to €24,000 so both options start with the same €6,000 of your own money.
The “true cost” row compounds every payment to month 48 at 1.885%, the 2.60% Tagesgeld rate after 27.5% KESt. That is what the money would have earned had it stayed in a savings account. The car’s market value at month 48 appears in all three columns, so it does not change the ranking. A borrower with a weaker KSV1870 record will see higher rates in both columns.
