Updated June 2026. Austria requires applicants to show sufficient funds before granting a visa or residence permit. Students under 24 need EUR 722.58 per month; students aged 24 or older and most other applicants need EUR 1,308.39 per month. If your monthly rent exceeds EUR 386.43, the excess is added on top. Use the calculator below to find your exact total for 12 or 24 months, including any children or rent top-up.

Select your applicant type, enter any children and your monthly rent, then choose a coverage period. The calculator applies the 2026 OeAD reference rates including the rent top-up rule.

How is the proof-of-funds amount calculated?

The Austrian authorities base the proof-of-funds requirement on the Ausgleichszulagenrichtsatz, which is the minimum income threshold used to determine the Austrian pension top-up. This figure is adjusted annually. For 2026 the thresholds are EUR 722.58 per month for students under 24 and EUR 1,308.39 per month for everyone else.

The formula is straightforward. Start with the base rate for your applicant type. Add EUR 201.88 for each dependent child. Then calculate the rent top-up: if your monthly rent is above EUR 386.43, the amount above that threshold is added to your monthly requirement. Multiply the resulting monthly figure by your coverage period (12 or 24 months) to get the total you must show in your account or blocked account.

Example: a student aged 25 paying EUR 700 per month in rent needs EUR 1,308.39 (base) plus EUR 313.57 (rent top-up above EUR 386.43) equals EUR 1,621.96 per month, or EUR 19,463.52 for 12 months.

How much do students need in 2026?

Austria applies two separate thresholds for students depending on age.

The rent top-up rule is easy to overlook. The base rates assume housing costs up to EUR 386.43 per month. Vienna rents for a studio apartment regularly exceed EUR 800 per month, which adds more than EUR 400 per month to the requirement. Always include your actual rent in the calculator to avoid underestimating.

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) from an approved provider such as Expatrio or Coracle is the most widely accepted way to satisfy the requirement with a single document. You can also set up a blocked account yourself, step by step, without using a specialist provider. See our blocked account provider comparison for fees and setup times. For the full requirements that apply to your student visa proof of funds, including the accepted document list, see our dedicated guide.
