The best business credit card depends on your company size, travel frequency, and need for team spend controls. The Sparkasse Business Smartcard at €1 per month is the lowest-cost entry point. The Bank Austria Mastercard Business World leads on travel perks at €130 per year. For teams, Pleo and card complete Corporate offer per-employee cards with real-time spend controls. Most Austrian business cards use monthly settlement, not revolving credit.

How Do Austrian Business Credit Cards Differ from Consumer Cards?

Austrian business credit cards are issued to a legal entity rather than a private individual. The company carries primary liability for all charges. Most cards require monthly-settlement billing (the full balance is debited from the company account monthly) rather than revolving credit, meaning businesses cannot carry a running balance the way American-style revolving credit allows. This is the same charge-card model used on most Austrian consumer cards.

Key differences from consumer cards include: company-level spend reporting across multiple cardholders, the ability to issue additional employee cards at reduced rates, higher default limits tied to business turnover rather than personal income, and integration with business banking portals and accounting software. Issuers like card complete Service Bank AG, which processes cards for Erste Bank, Raiffeisen, and BAWAG, provide centralised reporting via their business portals.

The application process is more document-intensive than a consumer credit card. Issuers check not just the KSV1870 credit registry but also Firmenbuch entries, beneficial ownership registers, and sometimes recent balance sheets. The Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKO) maintains an overview of business banking options for Austrian companies.

When Should You Choose a Corporate Card or Spend Platform?

A single business credit card (Firmenkreditkarte) suits sole traders, managing directors, and companies where one or two people control all spending. A corporate card programme (card complete Corporate, Raiffeisen management package) adds per-employee cards at scale pricing with centralised reporting. A spend-management platform like Pleo goes further: it issues physical, virtual, and temporary prepaid cards to any employee, sets per-card spend limits, captures receipts in-app, and exports data directly to accounting tools.

The rule of thumb: if you have 3 or more employees who make regular business purchases, a spend platform saves more in time and reconciliation cost than it charges in subscription fees. If all spending flows through 1 to 2 people, a classic business card is sufficient.

Use a business credit card when

  • 1 to 2 cardholders control all spending
  • You want the lowest annual fee
  • Travel perks (lounge, insurance) matter
  • You already bank with Sparkasse, Bank Austria, or Raiffeisen

Use a spend platform when

  • 3 or more employees make purchases
  • You need real-time spend approvals
  • Receipt capture and accounting exports are required
  • Temporary cards for contractors or projects are needed

What Documents Do You Need to Apply?

Austrian banks require company-level KYC documentation for every business credit card application. The process is more thorough than a consumer card. Amex additionally requires the business to have been active for at least 1 year before applying. Allow 1 to 3 weeks for processing at traditional banks, or faster for digital-first providers.

Identity documents (passport or ID card) for all authorised signatories and managing directors (Geschäftsführer). All must sign the application or provide a power of attorney.

  4. 4

How Does VAT Work on Card Fees and Statements?

A card statement is not a valid VAT invoice under Austrian law (see UStG via RIS). To reclaim input VAT on a business purchase, you must hold the original supplier invoice (Rechnung) that meets all UStG requirements: supplier name and address, UID number, invoice date, description of goods or services, net amount, VAT rate, and VAT amount. The card statement only proves that payment was made, not that a qualifying purchase was made.

The card fee itself (Jahresgebühr, Kartengebühr) is generally a VAT-exempt financial service under UStG Section 6(1)(8). You cannot reclaim input VAT on card fees. The same applies to Bankomat transaction fees and most payment processing charges. This is distinct from the VAT on purchases you pay for with the card.

Record retention: Austrian businesses must keep all business records, including card statements, supplier invoices, and bank statements, for 7 years under the Bundesabgabenordnung (BAO). The Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (WKO) publishes guidance on business record retention obligations for Austrian companies.

Card statement: not a VAT invoice

Proves payment was made. Does not allow input VAT reclaim. Always collect the supplier invoice separately.

Card fees: VAT-exempt

Annual and per-transaction card fees are VAT-exempt financial services. No input VAT to reclaim on the fee itself.

Record retention: 7 years

Keep all card statements, supplier invoices, and bank records for 7 years under BAO. Digital copies are accepted if the original format is preserved.
